Unit 5: goal 1 - i will learn...

This unit is the first Goal experience. This process will be repeated several times over the course of the year. As students progress, aspects will change, but the overall process will remain the same. Because of this, it is imperative that every student complete every lesson in this unit correctly before moving on. Every lesson should be graded everyday. I typically grade several times throughout the period on my tablet as I walk around the room checking in on students' progress. This allows you to correct misconceptions and mistakes quickly and avoid frustration later.

Ultimately, these first goals are about building confidence. Encouragement is king. When their actions aren't what you'd like, allow them to continue for the day and explain how to build on that action tomorrow. For example, instead of finding step-by-step instructions on how to shade an apple, a student is copying a shaded drawing of an apple from a Google image search. Encourage them to finish what they've started, but explain that a video or website that shows the steps to achieve that drawing would be a better resource for tomorrow's practice. Or, if that drawing looks good, then perhaps a more challenging subject is needed.

VA:Cr3.1.HSI Apply relevant criteria from traditional and contemporary cultural contexts to examine, reflect on, and plan revisions for works of art and design in progress.

VA:Cn10.1.HSI Document the process of developing ideas from early stages to fully elaborated ideas.

Evaluation Note:

When assessing for mastery on Studio Days, the verb is important. The instructions tell the student to evaluate their progress. If their writing is not evaluative at all, then they may receive credit for the image, but will not receive credit for the writing. They will need to add to their writing and re-submit.

Don't worry if these first creations aren't what you hoped for. As the students get more comfortable with the process, they can spend more mental energy on what they're doing instead of how they're doing it.
