Unit 28: Transforming spaces

This unit introduces students to large-scale, collaborative, site-specific, and interactive installations before tasking them with working together to create their own.

When asking students to collaborate, I've learned it's best if students group themselves. Yes, you'll have groups of friends that may struggle to stay on task, but I've found they're still far more productive this way. When you force groups, they have to spend a lot of time getting acclimated to each other and figuring out how they're going to get the work done. They also are more likely to argue or refuse to work at all. If you allow those that are already familiar with each other's work habits and personalities, they'll get more done in a shorter amount of time and have more fun doing it.

I purposefully left student examples out of this lesson because providing examples tends to box them in to certain types of projects. If you'd like to see some student examples, you can view some here.

Studio Day

At the end of the year there's so much going on, so it's hard to know how often students will be out of class. Duplicate this lesson as many or as few days as needed. Just be sure to make it clear what the timeframe is, so students can manage their time.
